Bustling Midwestern city named ‘most affordable place to retire in US’ in new report

A Midwestern town has been named the “most affordable place to retire in the US” in a new report by Gobankingrates.com.
The list features 50 options considering various factors, including housing, healthcare, food, transportation, and utility costs, across the 100 largest cities in the country.
Toledo, Ohio, has claimed the top spot on Gobankingrates.com’s list of the 50 most affordable places to retire in the US.
The findings indicate that retirees in Toledo can live comfortably on an annual budget of $37,646, nearly 28 percent below the national average.
Another factor to take into account is that approximately 16 percent of the city’s population is aged 65 and over, fostering a vibrant community of retirees.

One more appealing aspect of retiring in Toledo is the housing market, with Zillow reporting a median listing price of $113,033 in the city – more than three times lower than the national median value.
Michelle Michalak, a broker at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services/Luxury Portfolio International, highlighted the appeal of Toledo for 50+ communities.
These perks feature condominiums, villas, and single-family homes, often equipped with amenities like senior centers featuring year-round activity programs.
As well as these communities, Toledo boasts medical facilities within a 60-mile radius, such as the Cleveland Clinic and the University of Michigan.
A new clinic in the Aurora Gonzalez Community Center, specializing in primary and specialty care for senior Medicare and Medicaid recipients, was also introduced earlier this year.
Apart from its healthcare facilities and retirement-friendly communities, Toledo offers various cultural and recreational advantages.
The city is home to the acclaimed Toledo Museum of Art, known for hosting world-class exhibitions and providing art classes and cultural events for all ages.
Sports enthusiasts can also enjoy over 50 venues, including the Fifth Third Field, the home of the Toledo Mud Hens, the city’s baseball team.
With its strategic location bordering Michigan and situated along the Maumee River with direct access to Lake Erie, Toledo presents a well-rounded and attractive option for retirees.
